Our little boy Caleb doesn't need to be told twice when Daddy tells him to go "put on your boots"! He doesn't know where he's going, doesn't know how long it'll take or how much it will cost; All he knows is Daddy asked him to go spend quality time with him and that's all it takes for him to obey. We have heard the same request from our heavenly Father concerning adoption. We are embarking on this adoption adventure with Him not knowing the where and how; All we know is God wants to spend quality time with us and teach us who He is on a deeper level.

How we got orders!/ L'Appel de Dieu

Tina’s Story:
About three years ago, God kept on putting adoption in my heart. After looking into it a little I didn't feel ready to take the next step, and so I thought this was only a moment of compassion that had gone like it came.
Time passed and our little family grew. One day (about three weeks ago) I opened up my FB page and saw a little girl from the Ukraine who needed a family to adopt her. She was about to turn 16 and no longer would be under the "care" of her government. My heart broke for her. I prayed all day for her and told Adam about her when he got back from work. He was silent for a while and kept on thinking about her. He was moved with compassion too. We decided we'd pray about and for her and ask God to show us His will. I was so "relieved" and happy when we found out a family from our church submitted their paperwork to adopt her. I thought for sure God had closed the door again because adoption was not for us. To be honest I was happy to know my "comfortable" life was not going to change anytime soon, how selfish!
Last week (01/21/10) Adam filed his tax return. We have many projects that could be done on the house and I thought for sure Adam was going to want to put this extra money towards those projects. To my surprise he said, "You know maybe we need to pray about adoption and see if God would want us to use this money to start the process." I was shocked! Adoption was not even in my mind anymore; I started feeling very anxious about it. That night I went to bed and asked God to take control of my anxiety and replace it with a calm if it was His will for our family to adopt. Friday morning (01/22/10) I woke up with a peace that grew stronger and deeper as the day went by. At that point I knew the Lord had spoken to my heart and for some reason (not yet confirmed) I was thinking of a little Ethiopian boy. I didn’t want to doubt one second that it was His voice I had heard; I wanted to obey “right away, all the way and with a happy heart”, just the way I ask my kids to obey us.
When Adam came home from work I told him that God had spoken to me and that I was now going to wait for him to hear from God for himself. I prayed that God would show him clearly His will for our family.

J'ai commencé à me sentir très anxieuse.

Adam’s Story:
So I come home from work a few weeks ago and Tina says pointedly to me, “We need to talk.” Those four words usually mean one thing – it’s lecture time. She spoke of some girl in the Ukraine that would soon be kicked out of an orphanage because she was turning 16. Thoughts going through my head included but were not limited to: We already have 3. They are a handful. Another one would drive me to an early grave. I’m not healthy enough for this. That would be a heavy spiritual load. But on the other hand a 16-year-old’s help would be welcomed. I’ll have to build an addition on the house. I told her that I knew it was the “right” thing to do, but that it was not for us right now. Being “right” and being led by God’s Spirit are sometimes two separate things. His ways are so much higher than our ways.
For a solid week, I could not get away from the Holy Spirit’s voice. He melted my icy heart and every time I saw a picture of Haitian orphans in the news, I wanted to do something about it. I asked a young teenage girl at church whose parents are adopting about these Ukrainian orphan girls. “What happens to them when they age out of the orphanage” I asked. Without blinking she told me, “They get picked up for prostitution, are kidnapped and sold into other countries for the same, or they freeze to death in the streets.” I committed to praying about this option to save just one of them. I didn’t know who, or how old, or where, but I wanted to pull one out of this cursed world’s strangling death-hold.
Well, work got busier and so did I. Adoption went to the back burner for a little while. One Friday night after talking with Tina, I sat down on the couch and told God that I wanted to hear from Him directly on this adoption option. “God, what do you want us to do? Do we open up our home for this? Can we afford it? I don’t have the time to sway in my thoughts. Please make your answer clear.” I went to Isaiah 58 because I had missed Eric Wood’s teaching on it the previous Sunday night. Along with some other verses, God responded with clarity in verses 6 and 7. “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not to deal your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh?”
Summary: So God has said to bring a poor and outcast fellow human into my house and share my bread. We’ll see who this may be. At this point, He has said, “Adam, put your boots on, we’re going for a ride.” The boots are on. Now we’re making our way to the vehicle. I pray He has gas money…

“Voici le jeûne auquel je prends plaisir : Détache les chaînes de la méchanceté, Dénoue les liens de la servitude, Renvoie libres les opprimés, Et que l'on rompe toute espèce de joug ; Partage ton pain avec celui qui a faim, Et fais entrer dans ta maison les malheureux sans asile ;

  2. What to say? I feel the excitement and the joy in my heart all over again just reading through both of your stories. How true on both accounts. Simply asking God for peace if it is His will. Adam, to answer your question yes, God has the gas money. Not only that. He has the repair money and money for the tolls. God also knows the mechanics that specialize in the vehicle you're driving. Through your obedience, God will put people in your path that you can both minister to and that they can support you and minister to you through the journey. We are so excited for your family and keeping you in prayer now more than ever.

  4. Brought tears to my eyes! As a mother, my heart goes out to these 'lost/unloved' little souls. As a mother also, I'm so blessed to have children who are willing to do the hard uncertain things in life; following a Father who loves and cares for them. He will not lead where He will not provide. I appreciate the growing/stretching that He is doing in your lives and that you have submitted to following whereever that may lead. Love, Mom
